Fort Jesus is one of the oldest historical monuments in Kenya. Located along the Coastline of Mombasa in an area called old town, the Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th Century. It was used a transitional point towards trade destinations across the Indian Ocean. It also served as an abode of protection for the Portuguese who had settled at the Coast.
The Fort still has remains such as cannons, skeletons, towers, alleys and escape routes leading towards the ocean. Today Fort Jesus is among the World Heritage Sites and a popular place amongst tourists.
